Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is the study of individual gaits - how individual move, and how different species and/or different genders move. It tracks individual differences in gait to be able to determine an individual in a crowd, in much the same way as a fingerprint on an object is used.

As an interface method it is most often used as part of motion capture systems, translating the unique movements of the individual's physical body into the avatar's movements inside the virtual environment. It is quite possible to also use gait analysis to build up a database of walking styles for use by other avatars, or alife entities.

Like with other mocap systems, gait analysis typically uses markers or sensors on the body of the subject being studied, and multiple cameras positioned around them in the room. As the subject moves, it is the relative position of each sensor that is tracked. As the number of sensors increases, so does the accuracy of the analysis. Predictive algorithms can be used once enough data on the gait has been recorded, to accurately assess where the individual will end up at any given point in time - and exactly where each foot will fall.
